Potential students are urged to come along and get a flavour of the expanding University Campus Milton Keynes (UCMK) on 11th August, just two days before A-level results day.

During the day, there’s the chance to experience taster sessions in everything from computing to journalism to teaching, as well as being taken on a tour of the new facilities at the Saxon Court campus.

Paul Sant, Associate Dean of UCMK, said it will be a great day for all.

“The launch event, taking place just two days before potential UCMK students receive their A-level results, comes at a perfect time for everyone involved.

“Potential students will get a flavour of a wide range of courses available, what it’s like to be a part of our university environment and how it will launch your progression into the working world.

“Come and find out about the fantastic university right on your doorstep!”

A particular highlight will be UCMK’s focus on employability; many of the courses, including Human Resource Management, Events Marketing and Management, Public Relations in Practice, and Journalism, all have guaranteed work placements.

Prospective students can experience what it is like to study as an undergraduate, and learn about the University Business School’s exciting, ‘pod-based’ approach to teaching.

Teaching will also be a focus of the day, as students interested in a career in education will have the chance to meet the team, find out about the range of teaching courses available, and ask important questions, such as how to balance work, study and family lives.

Fancy a spot of journalism? Lecturer and Milton Keynes-based sports journalist Jon Boyle will deliver a ‘roving reporter’ session, with interviewing techniques, report writing and other tips and tricks of the trade all available to budding media professionals.

Practical computing sessions will add a more lighthearted twist to the day, with examples of the University’s 3D printing projects on show, as well as UCMK’s very own mini robots. There is even the chance for visitors to have a go!

But before that, there will be tours of the new facilities at the campus, which follow an opening address from Bill Rammell, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, of which UCMK is a part.

Back in March, UCMK announced an agreement with Milton Keynes Council to expand its Saxon Court campus, allowing for an increase in the number of students and courses.

The expansion will also see the establishment of a business innovation centre, strengthening the University’s links with small and medium-sized businesses and supporting local business growth and development.

Mr Rammell said of the new development:

“The expansion of UCMK is a sign of the growth in stature of the campus, its students and the University of Bedfordshire as a whole.

“Milton Keynes is an innovative, technological and modern area of the country, deserving of a university with equal aspirations. With the ever-growing UCMK, we are delivering that.”
