Milton Keynes is at the forefront of smart city technology which is helping local businesses keep their competitive edge, an ‘Ask the Expert’ talk revealed last night.

Focusing on Intelligent Transport, the event is the latest in a series of exciting talks run by University Campus Milton Keynes (UCMK) part of the University of Bedfordshire and Biztech technology forum, explored technologies that would enable efficient and cost effective movement of goods and people for the City.

Held at the inspirational Imovation Centre, Transport Systems Catapult in Milton Keynes, on Thursday 26 March, the event featured experts from the University, Biztech and Transport Systems Catapult. Guests were treated to a tour of the Imovation Centre’s transport modelling suite and other demonstrations of intelligent mobility, including air traffic over London, current motorway flows and other great apps.

Dr Paul Sant, Associate Dean of UCMK and member of the Institute for Research in Applicable Computing at the University said: “This blue-sky thinking event provided a great opportunity to showcase some of the ground-breaking work on transport systems which will have a massive impact on the way we live our lives in the future – and what’s even more exciting is that it’s all being driven by experts here in Milton Keynes.”

“That Milton Keynes is at the forefront of driverless pod trials really demonstrates the great work that is going on and is a great opportunity to leverage the city.”

While part of the talk focussed around technologies for the future, Dr Steve Ladyman, strategic advisor to Clearview Traffic and former Minister of State for Transport, discussed innovative technologies that are currently available and how they are best utilised to empower travellers.

Intelligent Mobility involves the use of real time data to move people and goods around in the best possible way – by air, land and sea - and is a key component of the Smart Cities movement.

Smart Cities are a model for how information technology and data analytics can be used to drive sustainable growth.
