Radio LaB, the University of Bedfordshire’s student-led radio station, has been nominated for ‘Community Project of the Year’ in Luton’s Best Awards 2015.

To make it into the final three nominations, Radio LaB, which has rebranded and expanded during 2015, had to demonstrate a ‘tangible community benefit’.

Radio LaB coordinator Terry Lee said: “Being shortlisted for this award is a testament to the hard work from our students and volunteers over the last 12 months.

“As a community radio station based at the University of Bedfordshire, Radio LaB is in a great position to provide an educational, worthwhile, and ultimately fun community project.”

The awards are run by Love Luton and include a category – Adult Achiever Award – sponsored by the University.

Joining Radio LaB in the awards is the University Students’ Union Green Hub, which is looking to take the crown of best Environmental Achievement.

Radio LaB, which works in partnership with a number of local organisations including Luton Sixth Form College and Luton Borough Council, will be competing against Creative Vision and Luton Open Arts Project in its category.

This year, Radio LaB, which transmits on 97.1fm, has held a number of external broadcasts, including of the general election in May.

Amongst a host of other initiatives, the station has held ‘The Exchange’, a mini-series using music as a conversation between young people and older Lutonians. Radio LaB has also been providing media training and radio facilities to local youngsters.

“By working with students, local young people and local partner organisations,” Terry said, “Radio LaB is a unique arm of the University – a community engagement tool.

“Luton is fortunate to have a resource that specialises in delivering this service specifically to its young people. Radio LaB is only going to become more relevant; growing bigger and inspiring more young minds over the coming years.”

Members of the public can vote for Radio LaB or the Green Hub in the People’s Choice Award.
