The University of Bedfordshire’s student radio station Radio LaB is aiming to raise hundreds of pounds for charity as a tribute to a young wrestler.

Rock Bottom Radio (RBR), a wrestling-based panel discussion show, has aired every Wednesday for two years, during which time the team discuss in-depth on matters of WWE and other wrestling franchises.

Now the team are planning a special 24 hour broadcast on Tuesday 25th October from 10pm called #RBR24, to raise money for charity Cavendish Cancer Care.

The team wanted to pay tribute to UK wrestler Kris Travis, who passed away earlier this year at the age of just 32, following a battle with stomach cancer.

RBR presenter and Journalism student Daniel Jones said: “Kris’ death really touched the team and we all felt we wanted to support the charity that supported him, Cavendish Cancer Care. #RBR24 is going to be a lot of fun – we can’t wait.”

For Daniel, this is a cause very close to his heart as his father Nigel also passed away after being diagnosed with stomach cancer when Daniel was nine-years-old.

“I witnessed my dad pass away due to the same condition Kris had and with them being more or less the same age, Kris was 32 and my dad was 31, it really hit me hard knowing he was going the same way,” said Daniel.

Best known by his nickname ‘Shooting Star,’ Sheffield-born Kris was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2014 and took a hiatus from wrestling, returning to the ring a year later after initially beating the disease.

However the cancer returned and Kris was forced to retire from the sport completely before he died earlier this year.

An online auction of wrestling merchandise will take place during the show, which will feature a number of special guests. Former WWE women’s champion Melina Perez and Shane Strickland, one of the fastest growing names in wrestling, have already been confirmed.

Radio LaB Co-ordinator Terry Lee said: “Rock Bottom Radio’s successes over the past two years are set to be seriously celebrated in this unique 24 hour broadcast. #RBR24 is a student-led broadcast, and one which demonstrates Radio LaB’s commitment to innovative radio content.”
