Professor Pierre Kuonen

The Parallel Object Programming (POP) model: A decentralized distributed OO programming model

Professor Kuonen heads the Grid and Cloud Computing Group at the University of Applied Sciences in Fribourg where he teaches Software Engineering (UML) and Distributed Programming. He has led and managed many EU projects in the fields of parallel languages and parallel computing and was heavily involved in the EU CoreGrid Network of Excellence, strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies.

Professor Kuonen graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and has been a field engineer in Africa in the petroleum industry and an Engineer at the R&D department of Charmilles Technologies S.A. developing CAD tools and expert systems. He obtained his PhD degree in 1993.

Evolution of concurrency and parallelism in the ARM architecture

John has over 25 years experience across both the software and hardware engineering disciplines, and currently holds the position of Multiprocessing Program Manager with ARM. John’s industry-wide impact is the market development of multiprocessing technology and introduction of integrated embedded multi-core processors having been responsible for the release of ARM11 MPCore, the first integrated SMP core.

Prior to working at ARM, John worked for Microsoft for 5 years, firstly as Group Program Manager in the Exchange Server group and latterly as the manager for its Wireless Telephony group responsible for product and the definitions and strategy of mobile devices.

John graduated from the University of York with a BSc in Computer Science and a Masters degree in Engineering Science from the University of Cambridge.
