PhD research: Personal Knowledge Development in Online Learning Environments: A Personal Value Perspective

Dr. Markus Haag

Dr Markus Haag completed a PhD research project at BISC, the Business and Information Systems Research Centre at the University of Bedfordshire. He investigated personal knowledge development processes and outcomes in online learning environments from a personal value perspective.

Markus holds a BA in Information Management from Stuttgart School of Media, Germany, and an MA in Intercultural Communication from the University of Bedfordshire. Particular interests in Markus’s BA studies were in the areas of international information management, knowledge management and knowledge organisation.

His focus during the MA was on cross-cultural psychology, the effective use of media (electronic media in particular) in a multicultural setting and intercultural training. The topic of his dissertation was: "Individualism-Collectivism and Personal Homepages: Self-Construal and Rapport Management as Manifested in Content and Design".

Dr Markus Haag won the EBSCO Award of the EBSCO Information Services GmbH, Berlin, for his BA thesis on automatic text summarization. The award was presented at the Newcomer Forum of the 24th Online-Tagung of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Informationswissenschaft und Informationspraxis (DGI) in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2002.

He was a researcher at KIeM Institute for Intercultural Management, Values and Communication at Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, Germany. He conducted an evaluation of dialogin The Delta Intercultural Academy (www.dialogin.com), a knowledge community on culture and communication in international business.

He contributed to the concept and design phases of diaLearn (www.dialogin.com/dialearn), a virtual campus for students of various BA, MA and MBA programmes offered by Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, Germany.

Markus did internships at the Fachinformation and in the department of Intellectual Property Management at DaimlerChrysler, and at RKW Baden-Württemberg e.V. in Stuttgart. He translated and localised the intercultural learning game Global Teamwork DIVERSOPHY.
