Alan is currently Professor of Human Resource Management, located in the School of Business at Charles Sturt University NSW Australia. His research focus is in the International dimensions of Human Resource Management specifically; and International Business, more generally. Whilst he no longer has a permanent teaching profile, he currently heads the supervisory team overseeing the research of 15 research students.
Alan’s publishing record includes articles in The Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resource Management, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, Cross-Cultural Management: An International Journal, Career Development International, Personnel Review, The Journal of Knowledge Management, The International Journal of Management Reviews, International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, Human Resource Development International and The Journal of Management and Organisation.
Research papers have been presented at various international academic conferences in England, Hong Kong, Australia, the United States, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Thailand, Estonia and China. These include the Academy of Management in the USA; the Conference on International HRM held biannually in various international locations and the Association of Chinese Management Research.
Alan has also been Visiting Professor in International HRM at the University of Paderborn in Germany; at Kansas State University in the United States; at the University of Twente in The Netherlands, and Nottingham Tent University and the University of Bedfordshire in England. In addition, he has been keynote speaker at International Business conferences in China, Malaysia, Australia, Switzerland, and Thailand.
Alan is also ‘Tenured Guest Professor of the International Business School of Yunnan University of Finance and Economics in the PRC and in 2010 received an award in recognition for ‘Outstanding Achievements’ in Sino-Australian Higher Education’. He is also an International Research Fellow, attached to the Centre of Leadership Innovation at the University of Bedfordshire, England.
Alan’s specific research interests are in Cross-Border Management, the Selection, Adjustment and Career Management of Cross-Border Managers, and in particular the more strategic use of cross-border assignments in enhancing business growth and development, cross-cultural management and strategic HRM. Alan’s most recent research project is titled “Selecting and Deploying Cross-Border Managers.”
