Joe Stevens PhD candidate presents paper at prestigious post grad conference.

Joe Stevens, a third year PhD research candidate, presented a paper at the 6th annual post grad conference hosted by the law faculty at the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights at University College Cork in Ireland. The paper entitled ‘The UN and the Individual Sanctions Regime, Towards an International Judicial Review Procedure’ was given on 26 April and was well received by those attending. The paper formed part of the wider conference on ‘Transformations and Reform, Structures and Mechanisms for Rights based Protection’ which was attended by PhD students from all over the world.

Dr Richard Lang presents paper at transatlantic conference

Dr Richard Lang, Senior Lecturer in EU Law and Fellow of the CRiL, presented a paper at the 19th International Conference of Europeanists held in Boston, US. The paper, entitled “Resolving dischord while preserving counterpoint: Walzerian equality for Europe’s Court of Justice?”, was given on Thursday 22 March 2012 and was well-received. Although held this year in Boston, this annual conference, which gathers specialists in European law and political science from all over the globe, is actually organised by the prestigious Council for European Studies at Columbia University, New York.

CRiL Fellow Awarded Prestigious French Prize

Dr Konstantinos Sergakis, Senior Lecturer in Financial Law and Fellow of the CRiL, was awarded the Prix Solennel André Isoré from the Chancellery of Parisian Universities during a special ceremony held at the Sorbonne University on 5 December 2011, in the presence of the French Prime Minister, M. François Fillon. The award recognizes the academic and scientific excellence of Dr Sergakis’ doctoral thesis on "The transparency of listed companies in EU Law", which he defended in November 2010 at the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne).

Each year, the Chancellery bestows a number of prizes in order to reward the academic and scientific quality of doctoral theses in law and political science, economics and management, medicine and science, arts and humanities, and pharmacy. The Prix Solennel André Isoré is the most important award given by the Chancellery for PhDs in the field of legal studies and is generally regarded as one of the most prestigious Ph.D prizes in France.

CRiL PhD student takes part in major conference on the rights of same-sex couples

Andreas Yiannaros, a PhD student in the School of Law and member of the European Commission on Sexual Orientation Law, participated in the international conference on “The Lack of Mutual Recognition of Same-Sex Unions in Europe: An Obstacle to the Freedom of Movement” organised by the French NGO L’Autre Cercle under the auspices of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The conference took place in Strasbourg on 18-19 November 2011.

Andreas was invited to participate in the announcement of the first results of a comparative study led by Professor Kees Waaldijk (Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, University of Leiden). In the context of the project, which involved twenty-nine legal experts from Council of Europe member states, Andreas was responsible for reporting on the current situation in Cyprus, focusing on the free movement of foreign same-sex couples and their families within the European Union.

A Declaration was adopted by the conference participants and submitted to the Council of Europe calling on Members of the European Parliament to bring legal and regulatory barriers for same-sex families to an end and encouraging strategic litigation in order to identify the gaps in legislation and facilitate changes in law and policy. Announcing CRiL Staff Seminars 2011-12

The Centre for Research in Law is pleased to announce the schedule for this year's CRiL Staff Seminars, which will be taking place on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm-2.30pm in the Moot Court of the School of Law.

The CRiL Staff Seminars provide an opportunity for members of staff, Visiting Lecturers and graduate students to present their work in progress to colleagues from the School of Law and other Departments, and to receive constructive feedback on their ongoing research.

Dr Konstantinos Sergakis awarded a Special Grant by the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation

Dr Konstantinos Sergakis, Senior Lecturer in Financial Law and CRiL Fellow, has been awarded a grant by the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation under the Special Grant and Support Program for Scholars’ Association Members 2011/12.

The grant was awarded for Dr Sergakis’ doctoral dissertation on “La transparence des sociétés cotées en droit européen” and is intended to cover the costs involved in the publication and dissemination of the thesis.
