Professor Liz Hamp–Lyons, Visiting Professor in Language Assessment

Liz Hamp-Lyons

In her long career, Liz Hamp–Lyons has worked in England, Greece, Iran, Malaysia, Scotland, Michigan USA, Colorado USA, Australia and Hong Kong.

She has been director of the Language Testing Research Centre at the University of Melbourne and of the Asian Centre for Language Assessment Research, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Her collection Assessing Second Language Writing in Academic Contexts (1991) continues to be widely read. 

Study Writing

In 2000 she published Assessing the Portfolio, with Bill Condon; in 2006 she published the second edition of her highly respected and popular Study Writing (CUP).

She is the editor of the journals Assessing Writing and Journal of English for Academic Purposes. 

She is also a member of the Editorial Boards of ESPJ, Language Testing, Language Assessment Quarterly, and the Journal of Second Language Writing.

Assessing the Portfolio

She has also contributed chapters to edited collections and the Springer International

Handbook of English Language Teaching.


Since 2004 Liz has held Honorary and consulting posts, and has been heavily involved in large research projects, principally for the Educational Testing Service (USA) and the Hong Kong Examinations Authority. 

She is senior consultant to the CET Reform Project (2005–2007) for the National College English Testing Committee of China. 

She has been a plenary or keynote speaker at multiple conferences in China and the USA, and in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Dubai, Greece and Germany as well as Hong Kong.

Research interests

Liz Hamp–Lyons' research interests include:

  • the development and validation of English language performance assessments;
  • rater training;
  • ELT teacher professional development (especially in school–based assessment);
  • writing pedagogy, theory, and materials for teaching writing;
  • language programme evaluation;
  • advanced academic literacy
  • English for Academic Purposes
