The IASR brings together research within the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, producing work which both anticipates and shapes key changes in policy, administration and practice in the area of social care, child care and protection, work with vulnerable young people and youth justice. It aims to build a trans-national, comparative, element into each of these areas.
In addition, the Institute is contributing to theoretical models for research with isolated communities: looking at concepts of social inclusion and exclusion, welfare and justice and service user involvement (or 'experts by experience') within research.
The IASR is committed to applied social research using innovative research methods to access 'hard to reach' and marginalised groups and to disseminating findings to influence policy and practice.
One example of this is our membership of Making Research Count (MRC), which runs an extensive programme of conferences and seminars for practitioners.
The IASR also aims to integrate research and teaching, foster the research careers of junior colleagues, research assistants and research students.
It is developing a range of post-graduate programmes, specifically post graduate diplomas and professional doctorates that draw on our key research areas.
Members of the IASR are nationally and internationally renowned for their research that confronts many of the most pressing social issues in contemporary societies.
Their publications in books and journals have made important contributions to policy and practice developments and they continue to work in the capacity of advisors and consultants to national charities and local and national government departments.
Their work has therefore had a significant impact in terms of improving the lives of young people.
