Centre for Young People, Poverty and Social Disadvantage

The work of the Young People, Poverty and Social Disadvantage research centre is led by Professor Margaret Melrose.

It is concerned with the social rights of young people, the impact of poverty on children and young people, and young people’s involvement in informal or illicit economic activity – in particular their involvement in drug and sex markets.

The centre is also concerned with the individual, familial and social consequences of poverty and disadvantage.

Young people’s poverty and disadvantage is a theme that links much of the research conducted by other research centres within the Institute of Applied Social Research.

While it pursues its own themes and perspectives the centre nevertheless works closely with other research centres within the Institute of Applied Social Research, in particular, the International Centre for the Study of Sexually Exploited and Trafficked Young People, The Vauxhall Centre for the Study of Crime and The Tilda Goldberg Centre.
