Professor Tiantian Zhang BSc MPhil PhD

Director of LIRANS

Professor Zhang graduated from Liaoning University and worked as a research scientist in the areas of Environmental Biology for five years (P. R. China) before obtaining an MPhil degree in Environmental Biology at Middlesex University and PhD degree in Cryobiology at the University of Bedfordshire. She worked as a post-doctoral research fellow and a senior research fellow before becoming a Reader in 2003 and Professor in 2005. She is the leader of the Cryobiology Research Group since 1995 and the Director of LIRANS since 2008.

Her last twenty years of research focused on: cryopreservation of reproductive cells and embryos of aquatic species; effect of cryopreservation on genome and metabolic activities of reproductive cells; and fish stem cell culture development and cryopreservation. Her research also includes ecotoxicological studies using fish cell lines and other biological materials. Her research has been presented at over 60 international conferences and workshops and has lead to 120 publications with 60+ being refereed papers. She has supervised 18 PhD and 6 Research Masters students.

She has obtained substantial funding from bodies such as the Wellcome Trust and the European Commission to study new approaches to cryopreserve fish embryos and oocytes.

LIRANS’ Cryobiology research activities, along with other activities, were recognised in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) as being at international and world leading levels.

Professor Zhang has developed two taught masters courses (MSc Biotechnology and MSc Cryobiology) has taught on both masters and undergraduate courses, and has supervised numerous research projects.
