How to apply for a research degree

To apply for a research degree, please make sure you fulfill the entry requirements and then complete the online research degree application form and upload your supporting documents.

You should have a good honours degree (2:1 or above) or masters degree or equivalent in the relevant subject area.

International applicants should be aware of our research degree English language requirements

Sensor research

Sensor Research Group

The group works on a range of chemical, biological and physicochemical sensor devices together with the necessary instrumentation.

A core expertise is in the development of disposable devices for industrial applications in process control and environmental monitoring.

Along with considerable experience, the group has facilities for the fabrication of batches of research prototypes, for example, using screen printing, cutter-plotting and lamination.

Appropriate sensing systems obviate the need for on-site maintenance, calibration or provision of reagents since all of the requirements can be built in at the fabrication stage of the disposable sensing element. In these cases, the end user can be confident that the measured data are reliable

Example project areas:

  • Sensors for trace metals in process control and environmental monitoring
  • Sensors for organic reagents in process control
  • Solid-state pH sensors for process control and laboratory measurements
  • Instrumentation for pseudo-continuous measurements with single-use sensors
  • Development of novel, covalently bonded ion-selective electrodes for nitrate, phosphate and ammonium
  • Whole-cell biosensors for rapid toxicity assessment and waste water treatment protection
  • Whole-cell biosensors for rapid BOD measurement
  • Sensors for rapid detection of microbial contamination (urine, blood, etc.)
  • Conductivity probes for analytical measurements
  • In situ generation of analytical reagents
