My RN was gained at Addenbrookes in Cambridge;
RM was gained at St Mary's Portsmouth.
Then studied for my ADM and MTD/PGCE with Royal College of Midwives and the University of Surrey. During this time, my practice
areas were Midwifery and Gynaecology.
Following midwifery and gynaecological experiences in
hospital, community and management I commencing teaching in 1976, progressing
from an Obstetric Nurse Tutor to Senior Lecturer in Midwifery, these were
combined teaching and practice posts.
Since 1994, my role has revolved around Women's Health within the University of Bedfordshire. In October 2003 saw the completion of my MPhil, in research entitled ‘Exploring how nurses and midwives gain their research skills’, which was an interest from my degree-days with the OU. This lead me into the area of Public Health and so to leading the present course.
As a graduate member of the BPS, this qualification has
made it possible to work with distance learning students through the London South
Bank University.
Over many years, I was an external examiner beginning in 1982 completing with Plymouth University 2005. Clinical area links remain Midwifery and Gynaecology.
Main sphere of teaching at present is with post-qualified staff and those undertaking the Public Health Masters.
In 2006 - 2009, I was awarded a
Senior Teaching Fellowship at the University
of Bedfordshire for my
research was into Clinical Simulation and its integration with health
programmes.
Over the last two years completing a Rit project looking at developments with e-learning which is being followed up with Sandra Leggetter exploring how effective the public health masters is in enabling students to gain skill in research.
My main areas of interest are Professional Development especially in relation to distance learning, Surrogacy, Public Health and now after my MPhil the workings of Ethics Committees.
