I have been
developing guided reflection since 1989 when I was head of Burford Nursing
Development Unit in Oxfordshire, England. This work has led to the development
of The Burford NDU model: caring in practice - a reflective and holistic
approach to clinical practice.
Within this model I developed The Model for Structured Reflection [now in its 15th edition] to enable people to access the depth and breadth of reflection.
More recently I established the School of Guided Reflection & Narrative Inquiry at the University of Bedfordshire – a truly innovative and creative approach to doctoral studies through narrative as a process of self-inquiry and transformation.
At the University
of Bedfordshire I am programme director for a multi-professional MSc in
Palliative Care
and Masters in Leadership in Health Care.
The leadership programme requires leaders to construct narratives of being and becoming the leaders they desire to be using guided reflection as a journey of self-inquiry and transformation.
In 1998 I trained to become a Complementary Therapist and work one-day a week as a therapist in clinical practice working with people with Cancer and more latterly with Parkinson’s disease in a study funded by the Parkinson's Disease Society.
I systematically reflect on my clinical practice to develop my clinical expertise and to develop my approach to narrative as a process of self-inquiry and transformation [towards becoming more effective in realising my vision of easing suffering as a lived reality]
I am dedicated to exploring creative
forms of narrative presentation through story, art, performance and more recently through play. I convene the International Reflective
conference each year in collaboration with organisations world-wide. In 2008, the conference was convened in new Zealand. In 2009 it will hosted by the University of Limerick and in 2010 coming home to the University of Bedfordshire.
I review papers for Journal of Holistic Nursing, The International Journal for Human Caring and Complementary Therapies in Clinical practice. I am external examiner for the University of Limerick MSc Palliative care programme and University of Westminster BSc programme for Complementary Therapies
In 2000 I commenced meditation practice and entered the Buddhist path which continues today.
I have spoken widely at conferences and published widely
Besides numerous journal publications I have has seven books published:
I am currently working on a negotiating publication for two new books:
