Course Director for MSc Psychological Approaches to Health and Management
I was awarded a PhD in the area of Psychometrics in 1999. The specific focus of this research was an investigation of perceived control in the context of comparative cultures and it used item response theory and differential item functioning to develop a new methodology for cross-cultural testing. It focused on concepts such as perceived control and has applications in more than one area of applied psychology such as education and health. This project was awarded the Pola-Harry Triandis PhD award by the IACCP. My technical expertise in modern psychometrics and cross-cultural psychology continue to be my main interest of research.
I teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels on topics directly related to my research interests in Individual Differences, Psychometrics and Health and Developmental psychology. I continue to research and do consultancy in the same topics as well. Recently I have worked with local primary schools and an acquired brain injury unit on the assessment of developmental and acquired injuries using computerised tests. The long term intention is to develop effective interventions for individual needs. This research involved third year students which was one of our aims in the study. I recently started a collaborative research project with Enfield CAMHS-NHS and the Education Authorities in North London schools to address the development of parenting skills in mothers of Turkish origin.
I regularly contribute to the Department of Psychology, the Consultancy and Training Unit and Postgraduate Medical Schools training workshops for newly graduated medical doctors. The areas covered include delivering psychological test development, patient doctor communication and team building.
