Sustainable tourism has become an increasingly popular field of research since the late 1980s. The definitions for Sustainable Tourism, including eco-tourism, green travel, responsible tourism of environmentally andculturally.

The most widely accepted definition is ‘tourism which leads to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems’ (World Tourism Organisation, 1996).  

Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries and systems. ‘For developing countries it is also one of the biggest income generators’ (Sustainable tourism-Turning the tide, Economic briefing No. 4, Earth Summit 2002) As Holden points out, tourism can create pressures that lead to an overuse of resources and threaten sustainability (2006).

This research is focused on sustainable development of tourism to achieve the harmony of economic benefits and ecological protection by critically evaluating responsible tourism in Mount Taishan protected area.

It will pay more attention to protection of the natural and cultural environment and the maintenance of the future development potentials while meeting the present needs of tourists and local inhabitants.

Aim of the study

To provide a comprehensive analysis of sustainable tourism development in Mount Taishan, in central Shandong province, China.

Research questions

  • How is tourism being used as a means for sustainable development in Mount Taishan?
  • How is tourism being used as a means for the conservation of the protected area of Mount Taishan?
  • What are the perceptions of tourism held by the key stakeholders of Mount Taishan
  • How does the western hegemonic concept of STD transpose itself in the Chinese context?

Methodology

A mixed method approach will be employed in this research study. The mixing methods enable the ‘deficiencies’ of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to be overcome.

Multiple methods of data collecting will be used in research including: in-depth interviews, focus group, purposive sampling of stakeholders Mount Taishan involved in sustainable tourism development and questionnaires.
