Research

The Physical Activity and Health Research Group are collaborating on a jointly funded research project with the Centre for Obesity Research, Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Trust. It’s a ‘Study of Insulin Resistance Factors; Exercise and Nutritional Strategies’ (SIRENS) and has received full Eastern Region Ethics Approval. The team (which included staff, 4 PhD students and 6 MSc students) are currently recruiting up to 100 overweight 14-19 year olds to assess the impact of different types of exercise, and a nutritional intervention, versus control group, on metabolic health (e.g. on risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease). The 12 week interventions are taking place at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and are fully supervised. Please contact either Dr Catherine Kerr (Catherine.kerr@beds.ac.uk), Daniel Bailey (Daniel.Bailey@beds.ac.uk), or Ben Davies (Ben.davies@beds.ac.uk) for further details.
Catherine Kerr, 3 PhD students; Daniel Bailey, Sarah Denton, and Ben Davies, and 5 students on the MSc ‘Physical Activity, Nutrition and Health Promotion’ have attended a 3-day ‘Behavioural Change’ course which focuses on motivational interviewing. This training supports the SIRENS study which involves 1-to-1 support for nutritional advice.
