Professor John Brewer has published the London 2012 Official Training Guide for Track Athletics,
Prof. Brewer was also invited to give a number of keynote presentations including:
· International Sweeteners Association Annual Conference. "The role of low calories sweetness in sport and exercise hydration" Brussels, May 2011.
· London Marathon "Meet the Experts" conference, 29-30 January 2011. Keynote presenter on both days "Nutrition and hydration for the marathon”
· University of Edinburgh Institute of Sport PE & Health Science Research Seminar Series to give a talk on "Anti Doping in Sport". May 2011
Prof. Brewer was asked to talk at UK Anti Doping / GlaxoSmithKline / London Olympic Committee Organising Group (LOCOG) "Scientists in Sport" Event, Kings College London. Presenting a workshop on "Issues in Anti Doping", March 2011
Prof. John Brewer delivered London Marathon Expo Seminar Series, 13-16 April 2011. to runners on "Nutrition and Hydration for Race Day
ASESRG members Prof. Brewer (Chair) Dr Paul Castle (Keynote) and Mr Kevin Wyld (Seminar) hosted an extremely successful a UK Anti Doping / GlaxoSmithKline / LOCOG "Scientists in Sport" Event at the University of Bedfordshire. May 2011.
Applies Sport and Exercise Group members have recentlyfeatured prominently on television and radio including:
· Prof. Brewer on BBC Radio 5 Live (Will 2hr marathon barrier be broken/ Nutritional sports drinks for performance),
· Prof. Brewer on BBC Radio London, BBC 3 Counties, BBC Northern Ireland, Sunday Times, Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.
· Dr Nick Sculthorpe was interviewed as an expert in steroid abuse for Chanel 4 ‘Dispatches’ documentary on steroid abuse in football
Dr Nick Sculthorpe has been invited to join the editorial panel for the newly developed Journal of Doping Studies.
Research group students had a strong presence and presented at the Student BASES conference.
The group expects to have a very strong presence at the European Congress of Sports Science 2011 in Liverpool with most staff and research students submitting abstracts. Dr Sculthorpe has been invited to chair a session.
Dr Lee Taylor has been invited to deliver an oral presentation atThe American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado (June 2011).
Kevin Wyld has been invited onto the MK Endurance Education Committee to liaise with national athletic coaches regarding how the group can help service the needs of their athletes.
KevinWyldhas negotiated with several high profilelocal external bodies (including Northampton Saints RUFC, Bedford Blues RUFC and Bedford Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit) to strengthen collaborative links.
Dr. Paul Castle has had three research articles accepted for publication this month in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, The Journal of Sports Science (in press) and the Journal of Neurorehabilitation (in press). The article in The European Journal of Applied Physiology entitled: Deception of ambient and body core temperature improves self paced cycling in hot, humid conditionsresulted in an e-mail of congratulations from the worlds leading exercise physiologist Professor Tim Noakes, and an interview with the US Men’s Health Magazine soon to be published.
Dr. Paul Castle will be welcoming Dr. Rob Duffield from Charles Stuart University, Sydney Australia to the research group in June. Dr. Duffield will be joining the group and working in the research theme of environmental physiology.
Iain Fletcher is working with regional national level junior athletes under the Talented Athlete Support Scheme (TASS). Iain is also the regional assessor for UK strength and conditioning association (UKSCA).
