How to apply for a research degree

To apply for a research degree, please make sure you fulfill the entry requirements and then complete the online research degree application form and upload your supporting documents.

You should have a good honours degree (2:1 or above) or masters degree or equivalent in the relevant subject area.

Sport, physical activity and recreation impacts all our lives – whether as participant or spectator – as evidenced by the importance allocated to TV coverage, newspaper articles, NHS interest, PE in schools, sports clubs activity and investment in the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games and the ensuing Legacy. The Social Studies of Sport Group has numerous ongoing research projects which consider sport as a social phenomenon. The areas of research covered by such projects include:

    •    Sport and topophilia (love of place) – especially sporting arenas.
    •    Sport mediation = especially the impact(s) of sport journalism
    •    Sport in the Far East – especially China and Malaya
    •    The 2012 Olympic Legacy
    •    Community Sport Leadership
    •    Community Sport Management
    •    Risk perceptions and physical activity – especially play amongst young people
    •    Equity and sustainability in active lifestyles
    •    Football fandom – especially issues of gender
    •    Football and community cohesion
    •    Social determinants of active lifestyles
