Cell and Cryobiology Research Group

There are currently four main research themes within the Group:

  • The development of protocols for the successful cryo-preservation of fish oocytes and early stage embryos.
  • Investigation of low temperature damage on cellular metabolism and genetic integrity.
  • Molecular biology studies of the impact of chemical and physical insult to cells, including embryonic stem cells, gametes and early stage embryos.
  • The establishment of a cryo-bank of DNA and cells of endangered fish species. LIRANS is the co-ordinating centre for the fish cryobanks of the global ‘Frozen Ark’ project.
