25 March 2011 (Mostly) unannounced building evacuation practice seemed to go well. The weather was
warm, sunny and dry and everybody was outside at the evacuation area within
about two minutes (particular thanks to Kunjan and to Roberto for checking
rooms) and the exercise was complete in about five minutes.
Points to bear in mind for the future: nobody used the emergency exit (spiral staircase from the first floor); neither the lift nor the disabled toilet were checked this time (short on fire wardens today); and visitors ("I don't really belong here") must congregate at the assembly area along with everybody else.
The Village security guard appeared at 250 Butterfield to find out what was happening. Having discussed past and present arrangements, it was agreed that the security desk should not be informed of either fire alarm tests or evacuation drills - so as to best test their procedures.
27 August 2010 (Mostly) unannounced exercise went well. Everybody was out within two minutes. There were few staff/research students
in the building - and no fire wardens on the first floor. Nevertheless, both
upstairs and downstairs were 'swept' - but neither of the two visitor lists were
brought to the assembly point. In the event, there was an 'extra' student at
the assembly point (he hadn't signed in) so this is something that needs
especial attention in the future.
26 January 2010 Sunshine and blue skies - but cold. Unannounced exercise - but carried out at the convenience of laboratory training session with external trainer. One member of staff was reported as stopping to put on coat, collect handbag and purse before exiting the building - contrary to both good practice and University guidance. Nevertheless, the building was evacuated within two minutes - and the building was declared safe to re-enter in less than four minutes.
Several new research students were not on the existing Building Evacuation Controller's checklist - so the checklist was updated accordingly.
25 June 2009 Expected but unannounced exercise in the absence of the 'usual' Building Evacuation Controller. Exercise initiated by third party volunteer. Everybody evacuated the building (within three minutes) and Drs Bloxham and Spikings took control. The Village fire warden was satisfied that the exercise proceeded well - and suggested that a list of chemicals and other materials be kept in the emergency file. Members of staff were also content with the way the exercise went - it was suggested that the Building Evacuation Controller's checklist be placed on the internet so that a new one could be easily downloaded.
5 December 2008 Two unexpected building evacuations today. Most staff were at Park Square, but Dr Bloxham acted as Building Evacuation Controller in one case and Dr Andres in the other. Both evacuations proceeded well - and both were found to be false alarms caused by contractors excavating a new sewer pipe in the bin store. The experiences of Drs Andres and Bloxham resulted in production of a new improved checklist for Building Evacuation Controllers.
5 June 2008 People were warned in advance that the fire drill would take place. The weather was good and everybody was out of the building and accounted for within two minutes of the alarm being activated.
