Access

2. Access

Access to the building is controlled by an electronic security door.  To ensure that visitors are not exposed to hazards of which they may be unaware, the front door must be kept shut at all times - except when it is being used for ingress or egress - and access must be controlled by staff and others that have been appropriately trained to ensure access is limited to those on legitimate business and under controlled conditions.

2.1 LIRANS Staff

All staff must be fully briefed with respect to: (a) access; (b) emergency arrangements; and (c) safe working arrangements at 250 Butterfield.  Briefing arrangements and a health and safety declaration for new staff are described at the following location:

Only staff with appropriate laboratory experience and training will be given unfettered access to the laboratory area.

2.2 Research students

Research students (i.e. PhD and MSc by Research) do not have the same responsibilities in law as do staff of the University.  Nevertheless, those students based at 250 Butterfield are treated as staff for the purposes of the induction arrangements.  Briefing arrangements and a health and safety declaration for new students are described at the following location:

Research students must be closely supervised in the laboratory area until deemed sufficiently competent by the Director of LIRANS or the Laboratory Manager on the Director's behalf.

2.3 Taught students

Students such as those on taught masters courses and undergraduate students undertaking practical sessions are treated as staff for the purposes of induction and must be closely supervised in the laboratory area at all times.

2.4 Facilities and Estates Department Staff

By the nature of their work, Facilities and Estates Department Staff may be inclined to believe that they should have unfettered access to all areas of the University.  This is not the case.  Under the Management Regulations the University is required to ensure that access to laboratory areas is restricted to those that have adequate training.  This applies both to Facilities staff and contractors and sub-contractors working on their behalf.  (Note - it is within the power of the Facilities and Estates Department access to give access to the laboratory area.)  Arrangements with the Facilities and Estates Department are described at the following location:

Notice that there is a special briefing note for Facilities and Estates Department staff (and contractors and sub-contractors) working on their behalf.

2.5 Cleaners

Cleaning staff are members of the Facilities and Estates Department but, since they have have routine access to the laboratory areas, there are special arrangements to protect their health and safety:

2.6 Visitors

A wide range of people visit the laboratory areas at 250 Butterfield - most particularly contractors for servicing equipment, and visiting researchers.  In the case that these people are to be left unattended for any length of time, it is essential that they are properly briefed with respect to the hazards and the emergency arrangements:
