How to apply for a research degree

To apply for a research degree, please make sure you fulfill the entry requirements and then complete the online research degree application form and upload your supporting documents.

You should have a good honours degree (2:1 or above) or masters degree or equivalent in the relevant subject area.

International applicants should be aware of our research degree English language requirements

MPhil/PhD

Following registration, a research student with the support and direction of the supervisory team will establish the detailed programme of study.

Full-time students would normally submit their applications for programme approval to the University Research Committee about four months after initial registration.

The normal registration is for MPhil, with the possibility of transfer to PhD. When the project is well underway, progress has been made and the research student has identified the direction of study which will lead to the PhD, stage application is made to transfer to PhD registration.

This would normally take place at between 12 and 16 months. The transfer process involves presentation of a seminar and submission of a report.

This process of formal scrutiny provides both quality assurance of the postgraduate research degree progression and effective formal academic feedback for the research student at critical stages in the course of their study.

Timings for the academic progression of part-time students will be longer and will vary depending upon the nature of the agreed commitment.
