Research
Following research carried out by environmental scientists at the University of Bedfordshire1 and colleagues at University of Liverpool and University College London on the impacts of the most destructive Etnean volcanic eruption during the 20th century, and which led to the destruction of the small town of Mascali, Professor Angus Duncan2 was invited to make a video presentation at a Congress held to mark the 80th anniversary of this historic event.
“The 1928 eruption is important as it is
the first major eruption to be scientifically documented, as well as being the
most destructive and the first example of a coordinated national response,” says
Professor Duncan, head of the University’s Research Graduate
School.
“This was the first time since 1669 that an entire town and population centre was destroyed by an eruption of Etna and since then, there have been no similar destructions on this scale caused from Etna.”
