Janey Gordon, Principal Lecturer

Janey Gordon is a Principal Lecturer in Media and the project co-ordinator for the University’s community radio station Radio LaB.
She teaches radio broadcasting and her research interests and publications are in the areas of community radio, mobile phones and media pedagogy.
She has a background as a professional radio broadcaster and started in radio as a BBC studio manager before going on to produce in schools radio and then into BBC local radio.
Her first book The RSL, Ultra-local Radio (ULP) is used at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and came about from working with the students on the University radio station.
Her recent radio research and publications comparing Australian and UK community radio stations was funded by the British Academy. This work led to a commission from the BBC World Service Trust concerning plans for community radio in Georgia.
Janey has also edited a second book, Notions of Community, A Collection of Community Media Debates and Dilemmas, Peter Lang Ltd, Oxford, which draws together the converging technologies of community media.
She is currently the Chair of the Media and Communications Reference Group for the Art, Design and Media, Higher Education Academy and a member of the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Association executive.

If she is not in a radio studio, Janey is most often found somewhere underwater, as she is a keen scuba diver and instructor. Janey is particularly fond of sharks.
