Claire Stancliffe

Football fanatic Claire is a second year BA (hons) Sport and PE student, and was awarded a Sports Scholarship from the University of Bedfordshire to help her achieve her potential.

"I'm currently involved with the England Deaf Ladies Football Team and Great Britain Women's Deaf Football Squad, and I recently represented England in the World Deaf Football Championships in Greece. I finished as the joint top scorer in the England team with five goals from left midfield! I also scored the first World Cup goal and have been selected to play for Great Britain Women in the Deaflympics in Taiwan.

"This scholarship will help pay for my individual training needs, as we are expected to train every day using a gym."

Off the pitch, Claire is keen to further her sporting studies. "I chose to study at the University of Bedfordshire as I wanted to increase my knowledge of sport and become qualified for a future job."

To achieve her goals, Claire is making the most of the facilities and support on offer at the University of Bedfordshire.

"I am profoundly deaf and wear hearing aids and rely on lip reading. The University supports me by providing me with lecture notes as well as providing me with other support. When I have used the Disability Support staff they have been very helpful."

"The facilities for disabled students are very good. The facilities I make the most use of is the library because of its easy access to Breo which I use for lecture notes."

When asked if she would recommend the University of Bedfordshire, Claire replied: "I would definitely recommend this University to other students. Disabilities shouldn’t stop you from learning and the University of Bedfordshire provides extra support to make learning easier."
