- About Us
Supporting our students is a top priority, and so whatever your age, gender, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation or disability, the University will help you get the best out of your studies and life here.
At
present, the University
of Bedfordshire’s
Student’s Union (UBSU) is working towards being an Investor in Diversity, and
is currently in consultation with them about achieving this status. So, why not
check out the information below to see what support, and diversity events and activities
there are at Bedfordshire to get involved in.
At our Luton and Bedford campuses we have Disability Officers, who work with the Students' Union to raise any issues to the University. They also ensure that disabled students have a voice in the University.
And that’s not all. Our Disability Officers also work with the Students’ Union to raise awareness and provide information and advice to staff and students about the needs of disabled students.
As well as Disability Officers, we also have a full-time Vice President Diversity and Democracy Officer. A key responsibility for this role is to identify under-represented student groups and develop strategies to increase representation.
In order to increase representation of these student groups, the Vice President Diversity and Democracy Officer leads a priority campaign around Diversity or Democracy every year. The Students’ Union also sends the sabbatical and student officers on NUS training to find out about national issues and trends. They also work closely with the NUS on best practice and general diversity and disability issues.
Here at Bedfordshire, we host a series of activities and events throughout the year to continually raise awareness across our campuses.
In January 2009 the Students’ Union asked students to get involved and 'see how it feels' by agreeing to spend a day in a wheelchair, blindfolded or with earplugs to raise money for the Disability Resource Centre and for Sight Concern.
And what’s more, in previous years, the Students’ Union has organised two Diversity Weeks to celebrate diversity and raise awareness of different cultures and religions in Luton and Bedford. These weeks incorporated interactive talks on many of the main religions; film screenings from around the world; a lesbian, gay and bi-sexual party; and a specially organised football match between the University football team and a New Zealand select XI under the 'Kick It Out' anti-racism banner.
