Days out in Bedford

Windsurfing on lake in Bedford

With a wealth of parks and green open spaces adorning the town and lining its urban riverscape, you can enjoy a variety of activities at Longholme Boating Lake or have a go at some serious water sports at Priory Country Park.

If water sports are not your thing, then you can always take a stroll or picnic at Bedford Park, which houses a traditional bandstand and pavilion.

Bedford offers an amazing selection of exciting activities and fun days out, and so it can be a hard task deciding what to do first. So, here's our breakdown of some of the best places to visit:

Bedford

  • Wild Britain is a 10 acre conservation centre with wildlife areas, woodlands and ponds. The centre actively encourages wildlife by designing habitats attractive to wild animals. You can roam through the site on nature trails. The centre also houses tropical butterflies and other exotic insects.
  • Marston Vale Millennium Country Park is a lively conservation centre set in 250 hectares of forest land. You can hire a bike, take a walk, or go horse riding through the heart of the wetland nature reserve
  • Priory Country Park is located on the outskirts of Bedford and offers a beautiful area of lakes and meadows. There’s plenty to do including bird watching, fishing and a wide variety of water sports
  • The River Great Ouse is a peaceful place to take a stroll and enjoy the countryside, gardens and meadowland. It is also host to the River festival which is held every other year
  • Oasis Beach Pool is full of water flumes such as the Yellow Screamer and the Flume of Doom. Combine this with an outdoor pool, lazy river ride, and wild waves, and this is the aquatic place you'll want to be
  • Bodyflight is the world’s largest indoor sky diving facility. Bodyflying is a sport open to everyone, not just the risk takers of the world and is a great experience
  • Monster Events offers you the chance to drive or ride in quad bikes, 4x4s and monster trucks. You can learn how to drive the enormous vehicles and then ride over a line up of cars, crushing them beneath the giant tyres
  • Palmer Sport is Britain’s largest race track. With five miles of purpose-built track, it’s the perfect place to drive sports cars fast
  • Sporting Targets is the UK's largest clay pigeon shooting club, and also offers a variety of activities such as archery, air rifle shooting, quad biking, as well as driving all terrain dune buggies and 4x4s off-road
