Employers

A professional practice year is a year-long work experience opportunity that most Home and EU students can undertake and it will form part of their degree. The students undertake a year-long job in a company or an organisation and will equip them with useful skills that will help them stand out from the crowd when they graduate. The students as well as the employers are supported by the Student Development and Awards team throughout that year.

A professional practice year can also be advertised as any of the following:

  • placement or placement year
  • sandwich year
  • industrial placement
  • internship
  • fixed term contract
  • year in industry

In essence, as an employer, you are seeking students who can fill a yearlong full time position that can count towards their professional practice year. Two out of three employers are using the professional practice year as an established talent pipeline to recruit the best talent.

There are various benefits of making a professional practice year part of your resourcing strategy including:

  • Have a short term, low risk, cost effective method to source exceptional talent
  • Have access to an employee with interest and knowledge within their subject area who could contribute to your company through the work they carry out
  • Have potential to carry out project or other work which you would like done but have no-one currently available to do so
  • Be able to promote your company to the students through that student you employ upon their return for final year
  • Have an opportunity to consider the student as a potential employee upon graduation
  • Have the opportunity to contribute to the skills development of young talent entering the labour market.

Any meaningful work which will develop desirable skills geared towards employment can count towards a professional practice year. The professional practice year can broaden, strengthen and give variety to what students maybe learning on their degree courses. Our curriculum is designed to support students in developing transferable skills that can be used in a broad range of occupations. If you have a vacancy but you are unsure of whether this would be suitable get in touch with the SDA team to we can discuss it further.

Employers can advertise professional practice year opportunities with our service throughout the year.  All students are different and they apply at different times of the year. Some students will be on a 3-year programme, realise the benefit of a placement year and come to find support later in the recruitment cycle whilst others will start applying from October onwards. We believe that it's never too late so if your company has a year's vacancy we encourage you to get in touch so we can discuss how we can meet your recruitment needs.

Within the Careers & Employability Service we also have our Recruitment Services Team who operates as a free in-house recruitment agency supporting employers to secure the best talent outside of placement year recruitment.  So if you need a graduate or wish to advertise part time or summer work, you are more than welcome to contact them.

If you have a placement year you wish to advertise contact our dedicated professional practice year team at cesplacements@beds.ac.uk or call us on 01582 489 293.

The SDA team provides a free advertising service to all employers wanting to recruit our students onto professional practice years.
