Dr Nahal Khabbazbashi

Senior Lecturer in Language Assessment

Nahal Khabbazbashi

I am a Senior Lecturer in Language Assessment at CRELLA. I have a DPhil in Education and an MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Oxford. Before joining CRELLA, I was Senior Research Manager at Cambridge Assessment English.

I have led the research strands of a number of high-profile international projects in different educational and language testing contexts from school settings in Uruguay to higher-education institutes in Egypt. I am active in the language testing community and currently serve as treasurer for the UK Association for Language Testing and Assessment (UKALTA).

I have recently led projects designing and validating an online speaking test for school children in Uruguay; reviewing, evaluating, and developing language tests for mobile delivery; and examining the impact of language learning initiatives on performance in different contexts. I am currently working on developing a content-oriented rating scale for an international test.

My recent publications include research papers in journals such as Language Testing (2020; 2017), Language and Education (2019), and Linguistics and Education (2019). I have forthcoming chapters in Challenges in Language Testing Around the World (Lanteigne, Coombe, and Brown, Eds.) and the Routledge Handbook for SLA and Language Testing (Winke and Brunfaut, Eds.). I am currently working on a manuscript provisionally entitled On Topic Validity in Speaking Tests for the Studies in Language Testing (SiLT) book series.

I research the assessment of language skills, particularly speaking; the use and impact of technology in assessment; rater-mediated assessment; and the effects of task and test taker related variables on performance. I have received grants and funding from organisations such as the British Council, Cambridge Assessment English, and the IELTS Joint-Funded Research Programme. I am currently interested in researching new constructs in the digital age in different educational and professional contexts.

I am an HEA fellow and have developed and taught a number of postgraduate courses on applied linguistics, language assessment, statistics in language assessment, and research methods in social sciences including at the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and the University of Bedfordshire. I regularly deliver workshops, webinars, and short courses for national examinations boards, testing organisations, and universities. Most recently I co-presented a course on Assessing Speaking in the Digital Age with Dr. Fumiyo Nakatsuhara for the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). I currently teach on the Assessment and Accreditation module of the Masters in TESOL programme and the Introduction to Speech module of the BA in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Bedfordshire.

I supervise doctoral students in areas such as the assessment of speaking, new task types and constructs in the digital age, designing and validating tests for specific purposes , rater-mediated performance, and the effects of task and test taker-related variables on performance. I welcome research proposals in these and other broader areas related to language assessment.

I have been an invited speaker at a number of events and have presented research at different international and national conferences such as the Language Testing Research Colloquium (LTRC), the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA), Language Testing Forum (LTF), and the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL).  My online webinar for teachers on Understanding assessment: what every teacher should know co-delivered with Dr. Evelina Galaczi has attracted over 75,000 YouTube hits to date (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeC_j3AhbZU).
