Weir, C.J., F. Nakatsuhara, A.B. Green and L. Taylor

September 2010 - February 2013

Funding Body: EIKEN Foundation of Japan

Summary: This project has been assisting the EIKEN foundation of Japan and Sophia University in developing and validating a new admissions test for Japanese colleges and universities. The new test, the Test of English for Academic Purposes (TEAP), will test all four skills of English, and will be a standardised test with transparent specifications to offer clear guidelines to students and other stakeholders as to the content of the tests. A major aim of the project is to have a positive impact on English education in Japan by revising and improving the currently widely varying approaches to English tests used in university admissions. This test will offer a benchmark standard of the English skills needed by Japanese students to study at the university level in the EFL context of Japan. The test is planned for release in 2014.
