Foundation degrees

How to apply

Foundation degrees (FdA/FdSc)

A Foundation degree is designed to provide a more occupation-based route through higher education.

A Foundation degree will normally take two years to complete by full-time study and can lead into the final year of a BA/BSc degree programme.

Some of our Foundation degrees are delivered at the University and some at our partner colleges. Wherever you study, you will be a full member of the University and entitled to use all the facilities, including the Student Union.

Application routes for UK students

The normal application route for full-time Foundation degrees is via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Applications should be submitted online.  If you are in full-time education, your school or college will be able to advise you on making your UCAS application.

For part-time study you should apply direct to the University or in some cases direct to the partner college where the course is being taught.  Information about non-standard application routes is included on individual course descriptions.

Entry requirements

A foundation degree will be of particular interest if you have completed a Modern Apprenticeship, vocational A levels, BTEC National or equivalent. Foundation degrees are also particularly suitable if you want to qualify while working.

As a guideline, a typical offer would require you to obtain a UCAS tariff score of between 80-120 points, based on your level 3 studies.

Many students studying for foundation degrees come to us through work-based routes so you can apply for a foundation degree even if you don’t have traditional academic qualifications. We welcome applicants with relevant work experience.
