About the course

This is a unique course within the UK which will lead to a comprehensive, historical and critical understanding of human rights alongside a thorough appreciation of social enterprises, project planning, budgeting and an understanding of voluntary and charitable sector contributions that support human rights in practice. Theoretically, both the 'harder', normative framework for human rights established following the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 'softer' side of rights formation emerging 'from the people' will be explored. Pedagogically, ideas around human rights 'from above' and 'from below' will enrich thinking during this course. Practically, social enterprise will be a key aspect of this course, allowing for support of students wishing to set up social enterprises following their studies.

The course will lead to a comprehensive, historical and critical understanding of human rights, alongside social enterprises, project planning, budgeting, research, monitoring and evaluation, securing funding, and an understanding of voluntary and charitable sector contributions that support human rights in practice.

In this respect, the course has been designed for students who are interested in establishing their own local, national or international based social enterprise utilising the theoretical, substantive and practical skills gained throughout. It is also designed for students who may also wish to enter into or enhance their knowledge, skills and competencies for work in the voluntary, charitable, governmental and inter-governmental sectors.

Assessment aims to enhance the learning experience rather than simply provide academic hurdles to be surmounted. Nonetheless it must offer a reliable test of the student’s level of academic attainment. To achieve this, the assessment methods used must relate closely to the intended unit learning outcomes as evidenced in the UIF’s, whilst allowing the student maximum scope for creativity in fulfilling them.

The assessment strategy is intended to enable students to:

1.Show originality in the application of knowledge and understand how the boundaries of both fields of human rights and social enterprise are advanced through research,

2.Deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively and show originality in tackling and solving problems, and,

3.Have the qualities needed for employment in circumstances requiring sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable professional environments.

The range of assessment methods to be used will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their competence in a variety of ways reflective of different learning styles and will ensure the focus upon a critical awareness of the literature and the application of knowledge into practice. Assessment methods will include a blend of traditional essay and report writing alongside oral presentations, individual projects, coursework and use of case studies.
