About the course

This course supports English language teachers – both home and international - to further develop and enhance their teaching skills. It offers a placement opportunity, allowing you to observe English language teaching in practice in a UK setting.

The course is part of our International Education suite of Master’s, sharing units with two other pathways; there is a core unit unique to English Language Teaching (ELT), with substantial related material in shared units.

This ELT pathway gives you an international perspective on key issues in teaching and learning English as a second language such as language acquisition; bilingualism and multilingualism; patterns of interaction; and the teaching and learning of English across borders. You are encouraged to explore issues, areas and countries of particular personal relevance.

Why choose this course?

  • Develop your practical skills and knowledge while gaining a deeper understanding of the complexities of being a teacher in modern educational and EAL/ELT settings
  • Explore how schools in the UK are run through organised visits and a placement
  • Investigate how education is practised in different cultures, drawing on policy, practice and theory
  • Enhance your skills of reflection, able to consider your strengths and how you can continue to develop your skills
  • Undertake an independent research project focused on ELT in education, with an international dimension
