The MA in Education (Leadership) is aimed at developing your knowledge of leading change within organisations which have education as a key focus. This could include Schools, Early Years settings, colleges, local government, NGOs, prisons, military and private training organisations.

The course provides a dedicated route for those in management positions (or on a management career path). The course aims to develop both analytical and practical skills and will equip you to critically analyse current practices and processes as well as develop your own approaches to effective change.

How will I be assessed?

Each unit in this course has its own assessment. Wherever possible, the specific focus of assignments is negotiated individually between the unit tutor and the student, within the parameters of the unit, in order to ensure that the assignment meets your personal and professional needs. This ensures a personalised experience for students that ensures that the work that students engage with is relevant to their contexts. The course provides students with a carefully planned and coherent sequence of learning opportunities that facilitate your development through formative and summative assessments.

At this level the expectations, in terms of the quality of work produced, are high and students will need to take active control of their learning. At Masters level the expectation is that students are autonomous and confident learners, will undertake assessments that are challenging and require mature argument and sustained research, and fluent and cogent presentation. You are encouraged in your assessments to draw upon an extensive range of sources to demonstrate a deep theoretical understanding and the ability to critically apply that to current issues and contexts. Students are required to demonstrate an appropriate level of research, of independent argument, and to reference in an appropriate way. They will be expected to engaged with teaching materials and core texts, but they will also be expected to search and select appropriate academic research and current policy documents relevant to their area of interest.

Through the assessments designed for individual units, you will practise and reinforce skills in researching, evaluating and synthesising materials with a critical eye; quantitative and qualitative data collection and handling, together with skills associated with conventional academic tasks. Unit assessment is based on specified learning outcomes and threshold criteria. This information will be published and easily accessible on the learning platform.

Assessment webinars provide a forum for the tutors to briefly explain the syllabus and explain the assignment requirement of each unit. Students are advised by the tutors to prepare for the webinars in advance by reading the relevant material and referring to the additional reading.

Research webinars are conducted for students who are registered for research related units (your dissertation). An approved supervisor will guide you on areas such as how research needs to be conducted, research objectives, critical evaluation of literature, designing a suitable methodology for the research and analysing data gathered etc.

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

We aim to integrate examples from practice, up to date case studies and projects focussed on particular development projects and organisations throughout the course. Examples from a range of settings will help to provide a good understanding of a range of future employment contexts as well as providing practice related understandings. The course is designed to help you engage, study and critique key issues in education as well as to be able to identify and justify recommendations for further action. As a Masters graduate, therefore, you will have the confidence, knowledge and critical skills to prepare and present a strong application to senior posts in the field of education.
