Unit Information – What Will I Learn?

The PgCert in Medical Education is obtained by attending and passing two units:

  • The Core unit (Medical Education in Practice)

and either:

  • Workplace Based Learning or
  • Educational Perspectives for the Workplace

How will I be assessed?

Your assessment combines formative and summative elements i.e. assessment for learning and assessment of learning. It is designed to foster strong links between learning on the course and the lived realities of medical and healthcare educators working in Higher and Professional education contexts.

There are three assignments in the core unit (Medical Education in Practice): a reflective report, a teaching observation report and a reflective portfolio.

The second (option) unit requires either a literature review and an academic paper, or an individual report following collaborative on-line work and an academic paper.

Entry requirements

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

The course is endorsed by the Academy of Medical Educators; this means on successful completion you can apply for membership through the ‘fast track’ accredited course route. The course therefore provides a sound basis for evidencing your competence as a medical educator and trainer.

The course enables you to adopt a critical stance to your own and others’ educational practice and to propose ways to enhance student and trainee learning experiences. You will rehearse these skills through opportunities for peer observation of teaching and collaborative activity (including online work).

This course will equip you with the skills and understanding to provide excellent, and enjoyable, training opportunities to less-experienced professionals in your field.

Committing to understanding how you, your students and your trainees learn, and how we can facilitate this effectively will transform your approach to learning and teaching and increase both your confidence and competence as an educator.
