Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) MSc

About the course

When you study with us on this course, you will focus on the provision of healthcare and social care to individuals, groups and communities within specialist community services.

The focus is on developing your competence, confidence and expertise in assessing the needs of your clients, and working in partnership with them to make informed, holistic health choices.

The ultimate aim is for you to mature into someone with the skills, knowledge and understanding to function as a valuable member of the community, and become a reflective, evidence-based and innovative practitioner as you deliver a client-centred programme of care.

Intermediate qualifications available:

  • Postgraduate diploma – 120 credits at Masters level

Why choose this course?

This course offers the opportunity to study for a combined Master of Science / Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) qualification. Success in the Master of Science in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) course will provide the professional qualification and eligibility to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse- Health Visitor.

 

Emphasis throughout the course is placed on your continuing personal and professional development with the aim of improving your employability prospects. You will focus on issues of direct relevance to the achievement of Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) health visiting status whilst pursuing a postgraduate course of study in a supportive learning environment.

 

There are opportunities for conference attendance and presentations. Studentfocused, self-directed and guided learning, small group tutorials, encouragement of peer support, using a variety of teaching methods e.g. e-learning, work based learning, problem based learning, simulation, role play, studentled seminars. There is an emphasis on continuing personal and professional development (lifelong learning).

How will I be assessed?

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: - Immediate professional relevance - Draw on expertise-by-experience - Foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow students to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. The assessments will include a range of possible approaches: - Portfolio of learning - Case studies - OSCEs and written examination - Reflective accounts - Community Profile - Presentations - Essays - Journal and report writing Dissertation or Service Improvement project Each of these completed assessments will enable you to demonstrate the ability to critically understand and evaluate complex issues relevant to healthcare and communicate these effectively to a range of audiences. This strategy informs the assessment methods for each individual unit within the course and is based on Masters level descriptors and course learning outcomes. There are specific professional requirements for passing some of the units in the course. These requirements are stated on the relevant unit information forms (UIFs).

Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree at Honours level, or equivalent.

The full-time standard fee for a taught Master's degree for the Academic Year 2020/21 is £7,840 per year. You can apply for a loan from the Government to help pay for your tuition fees and living costs. Visit www.gov.uk/postgraduate-loan
