Unit Information - What will I learn?

Units

  • Classroom Practice (LNG017-2) Compulsory
  • Techniques And Skills For Elt (English Language Teaching) (LNG018-2) Compulsory

How will I be assessed?

This course assessment is based on both formative and summative assessment with tutor-assessed work but also with some opportunities for students self-assessment. There are two assessment points: 1. A Teaching Practice Portfolio collecting a minimum of six observed and assessed lesson plans (a minimum of six hours) and associated materials with at least two different levels of proficiency. This should also include an overview and self-evaluation of the teaching practice experience; 2. A portfolio of tasks demonstrating understanding of learners needs; grammar and materials development in the teaching context 3. Following normal UoB quality procedures, the above assessment points are appropriately, externally moderated: a sample of written projects, as well as a sample of the teaching practice DVD recordings, are sent and duly considered by our external examiners.

Entry requirements

Candidates should:

  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to study at level 5 through previous study and/or experience, for example, having studied for a professional qualification or part or full completion of an HND or degree;
  • Have an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no score lower than 5.5 or equivalent for non-native speakers of English

Additional requirement:

  • An interview with the course co-ordinator may be required.

Students who graduated from our BA English Language with TEFL programme and who successfully completed the unit LNG012-2 Practical Skills for Language Teaching during their degree, may be considered to have the LNG018-2 Techniques and Skills for ELT unit of this course, accredited for prior learning.

How will this course improve my career prospects?

The English Language Teaching course leads to TEFLi status - the entry level qualification for the English language teaching profession worldwide

With this qualification you could travel and work overseas, embark on a teaching career by proceeding to further study, or explore education support roles in schools or with EAL (English as an additional language) education for adults or children.
