How will I be assessed?

This course uses a range of assessment strategies and upon completion you will have been required to demonstrate an ability to:

Develop action plans to demonstrate a problem solving approach to learning

Complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate critical appraisal of your practice and pertinent literature

Prepare essays to demonstrate application of pertinent theory to and evaluation of practice

Prepare and lead presentations/seminars to demonstrate your confidence and ability to communicate knowledge and understanding verbally to a peer group in a critical manner.

The assessments that are used are designed to help prepare you for the range of activities you will engage in once you finish the course. In particular the notion that professional learning is life-long is emphasised. In relation to future employment, as a health care worker the skill to be able to critically appraise practice of both yourself and others, is essential in maintaining patient safety and enhance the quality of health care services. Most health care workers are required to maintain a personal portfolio of professional development and the construction of a portfolio of evidence of learning will contribute to this process. The inclusion of presentations as a form of assessment will develop your confidence in conducting formal presentations and discussions, which is important to work effectively within a multidisciplinary/multi agency environment. Individual assignments place responsibility on each student to work under self-direction and to manage their study time effectively, attributes which are also necessary in the work environment.

Entry requirements

This course is for applicants with a related Foundation Degree or Higher Education qualification wishing to top up to the full BA/BSc degree.

You must have:

  • An Overseas Registered Nurse Qualification (this course of study must not be less than three years)
  • IELTS 6.0

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

The course provides students with the opportunity to work collaboratively with peers as well as fostering independence, self-direction and self-reliance. These reflect the ways in which health care professionals work, in order to be effective in delivering individualised, safe, high quality health care. The course also introduces new concepts in health care, which students can take back to their own areas of practice to influence change.

The course aims to build students confidence, so that they can articulate ideas clearly to colleagues and challenge others viewpoints and actions when necessary.

A major feature of this course is that the qualification is recognised by nursing councils in other countries including the Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery Council and the education authority in Nigeria and has been used by students seeking promotion in their nursing careers in Nigeria.
