Kathryn Jones - Post Qualifying Lead for Practice Education, Senior Lecturer

Kathryn JonesI qualified as a social worker in 1982 and before joining the University in 2006, my social work career was as a front line social worker, in adult care teams, with a particular interest in older people and mental health. I gained my practice teaching award in 2005, and my interest and enthusiasm for practice learning began. As a practice teacher I provided placements to social work students within my team and later supported social work students as an independent practice teacher.

My experience of practice learning, as a practice teacher and as a member of the practice learning team within the university, has enabled me to see the benefits that good quality practice placements can offer social work students. Practice educators play a key role in developing learning environments that supports students to develop practice skills and make links between their academic learning and practice. I am very committed to supporting practice educators to develop their craft of practice learning and to further their knowledge to enable them to become excellent practice educators. I am committed to lifelong learning, and as an Ma student myself I am reminded of the challenges in balancing study with work commitments.

My role as the Post Qualifying Lead for Practice Education includes being the course coordinator for the MA in Applied Social Work: Practice Education. I am also part of the practice learning team and I feel that both these roles supports me in developing a community of practice for practice educators who work with the University of Bedfordshire.
