International Business, Marketing & Tourism

Head of Department: Dr Karl Knox

The Department has around 40 full-time members of academic staff and provides high quality teaching and research to over 1,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, combining theory with professional practice in subject areas with a strong employability record.

We provide  undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of advertising, marketing, PR, tourism, hospitality, environmental management, event management, and aviation and airport management. We are also home for the MBM programme suite, which offers business management courses with various specialisms.

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has described our teaching as 'inspirational', with our lecturers providing exciting, real-world and motivational approaches to teaching marketing, tourism, hospitality and event management.

Our courses are approved by professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), offering important exemptions from professional examinations.  

Our teaching is underpinned by research which has been highly rated by the Government's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with the Sports-related Studies Panel concluding that the University has 'world-leading research' in Tourism.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses have a practice-based and employability focus, involving extensive real-world projects, close liaison with businesses and organisations and 'Employer Days' where industry experts engage with our students.  Our unique Business Pods have also been commended in a recent Government Green Paper as 'best-practice' within University teaching and learning.


The department has two active research centres:

  • The Centre for Advances in Marketing concentrates on research into branding (particularly SME and financial services), cross-cultural marketing, marketing communications and entrepreneurship, as well as encouraging collaborative and interdisciplinary research, for example pedagogy
  • The Institute for Tourism Research (INTOUR) is focused on the sustainable economic, environmental, social and cultural development of tourism, leisure and events
