Head of Department: Dr Karl Knox

The Department has around 40 full-time members of academic staff and provides high quality teaching and research to over 1,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, combining theory with professional practice in subject areas with a strong employability record.

We provide undergraduate courses in the areas of advertising, marketing, tourism, hospitality, event management, international business, and aviation and airport management. We also offer Masters courses in management, digital marketing, events management, tourism management, and international relations management.

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has described our teaching as 'inspirational', with our lecturers providing exciting, real-world and motivational approaches to teaching marketing, tourism, hospitality and event management.

Our courses are approved by professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), offering important exemptions from professional examinations.

The Marketing Club, which is one of only three student-led societies in all the universities in the East of England region established in partnership with CIM, focuses on field trips and workshops which add another element to learning.

Our teaching is underpinned by research which has been highly rated by the Government's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with the Sports-related Studies Panel concluding that the University has 'world-leading research' in Tourism.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses have a practice-based and employability focus, involving extensive real-world projects, close liaison with businesses and organisations and 'Employer Days' where industry experts engage with our students. Our unique Business Pods have also been commended in a Government Green Paper as 'best-practice' within University teaching and learning.


The Department's Centre for International Business and Marketing (CIBAM) takes an inter-disciplinary research focus that stretches from international business to social psychology, marketing, tourism destination studies, and several other disciplines. The inter-disciplinary perspective constitutes a key feature of teaching and research activities within the department which are supported by staff who contribute to world-leading research.

Our research active staff regularly publish in peer reviewed journals and books, as well as participate in national and international conferences.

CIBAM also supports doctoral research with a growing cohort of research students engaged in inter-disciplinary research.

Research at CIBAM is part of a larger research culture that is reinforced by a well-established research training system at both research centre and institute levels.
