Learning support

Lecturer with two students in tutorial

Tutorials

All our students have a personal tutor. Personal help students overcome any barriers to their learning and offer advice and guidance to ensure students can make good progress.

Academic tutorials help develop knowledge and skills throughout the curriculum and explore the broad themes that emerge from each programme of study. This allows our students to have confidence when discussing contemporary issues in the Life Sciences, which is important when applying for careers.

Honours project

In the third year, all students undertake independent research, supported by regular meetings with a member of staff. The third year project is comprised of both a lab-based component and a dissertation.

Peer-Assisted Learningstudents discussing work in an informal setting

The School of Life Sciences runs Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) sessions every two week. This is where first year students are assisted in their learning by second or third year student volunteers.

This gives them the opportunity to learn from more advanced students and ask the questions about your studies that have not been addressed by the course team (or questions that they don't want to ask their lecturers).

Our PAL volunteers gain valuable experience reinforce their own learning through the teaching of others.

Professional and Academic Development

You can also receive support from Professional and Academic Development (PAD) workshops, appointments and drop-in sessions.

These provide guidance on topics such as IT skills, academic writing, data handling, giving presentations and exam revision. Their flexible delivery means you can attend them whenever necessary.

Your lecturers will also refer you to PAD for support if they identify a particular need when giving you feedback on your work.
