Research Interests

In 2006 I was awarded a Senior Teaching Fellowship at the University of Bedfordshire for my research into the integration of the Virtual Learning Environment with Clinical Simulation and its integration with distance learning access and the development of extended e learning packages.

Other research undertaken includes; the pedagogy of blended learning and its development within the Diploma Higher of Education (Operating Department Practice) pathway. A further study in 2007 was entitled Communal constructivism does it exist within the Diploma Higher of Education (Operating Department Practice) pathway. A further study of the introduction of reflective study to health care education in North America was completed in 2008. This work has developed into the construction of signature pedagogies.

Recent Research Projects

  • “Closing the perioperative theory practice divide through the development of a signature pedagogy”. Through the use of hermeneutic phenomenology collect the data required to populate a perioperative signature pedagogy.
  • “Defining Higher Order Thinking: The Academics Perception”. A qualitative study of all the UK Operating Department Practice delivery teams, with the aim to identify their perception of Higher Order Thinking.
  • "Does Clinical Simulation stimulate Higher Order Thinking Skills in Medical Education?" A study to compare and contrast the higher order thinking skills of student ODP cohorts who  have received simulation against those who have not. This study will compare the cohorts throughout their studies and evaluate the employability of each cohort at the end of their programme.
  • "Does clinical simulation impact on student preparation for clinical practice? The mentor's perception. "A study to evaluate the use of simulation in the preparation of undergraduate ODP students from the perspective of the clinical mentor.
  • "The use of reflective feedback to enhance student awareness of feedback: A response to the National Student Survey." A study to evaluate an intervention implemented as a result of the national student survey results.
  • “A hybrid approach to reflection within the perioperative care pathway through the use of reflection-for-learning and the e-portfolio” The implementation and evaluation of hybrid approach to reflection-for-learning within the e-portfolio.
  • “Reflection or Critical Thinking?: A pedagogical revolution in North American health care education". The reflection-for-learning model and its development into a spherical hybrid reflective model.
  • Communal constructivism does it exist within the Diploma Higher of Education (Operating Department Practice) pathway. A study under taken at the University of Bedfordshire.
  • The integration of electronic and clinical simulation Virtual Learning Environments (VLE)  through Blended Learning. To create an integrated VLE with distance learning access. Production of extended e learning packages and integrated distance learning packages which may be transferable as models for university wide distribution.
