Opening of crime scene lab

Scene of Crime Lab - Forensic field exercise

The Scene of Crime Lab was designed by BSc Forensic Science course leader Dr Louisa Vincini and formally opened in December 2013 by Crimewatch presenter Nick Ross

Designed as a “normal flat” the lab allows Forensic Science students to work in three crime scene rooms (a dining, living and bedroom) each set up as if they have been the location of a range of serious offences.

Each room has the facilities to record fluids, fingerprints and footmarks, as well as the ability to take swabs of DNA. There are cameras in each room, and the students can use these to analyse their work, or to watch one of the mock crimes ‘in action’.

This specialist laboratory immerses students within a scenario, providing them with the opportunity to tackle problems in a real-life situation and hopefully enabling them to find solutions to overcome them. Such transferable skills are essential for a career in forensic science and will support our desire to keep employability levels at the University of Bedfordshire as one of the highest in the country.
