Professor Angel Chater

Professor in Health Psychology and Behaviour Change

Angel Chater

I am a registered Health Psychologist and Sport and Exercise Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS), Professor in Health Psychology and Behaviour Change and the Director of the Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR).

My expertise is in intervention design, delivery, evaluation and adoption systems (IDDEAS), encapsulating the use of psychological theories, models and techniques to change behaviour. My research, teaching, training and practice applies behavioural science to understand and intervene with factors that influence behaviours that impact on health, illness and how we interact with the health care system. It spans multiple populations (children, adults, health professionals), behaviours (physical activity, eating behaviour, medication use, health care communications), experiences (death, food insecurity), and health outcomes (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, depression), with the connecting thread being the application of behavioural science to optimise physical health and psychological wellbeing. My research has impact with international reach, often targeting vulnerable populations and with real-time physical and psychological benefit.

As a ‘first generation’ academic, I am an excellent example of the University’s investment in ‘widening participation’, starting at the University of Luton in 1996 and completing my BA (Hons) Psychology degree in 2000, with a young baby in tow. I went on to achieve an MSc in Health Psychology, BPS Chartered Status in Health Psychology and Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (HEA) while at the University, which later became the University of Bedfordshire.

In 2012 I moved to University College London (UCL) as a Lecturer in Health Psychology and Behavioural Medicine, taking psychological approaches to pharmacy, and was affiliated to the newly developing UCL Centre for Behaviour Change, where I became an Associate. In 2016 I moved back to the University of Bedfordshire, to the School of Sport and Physical Activity (SSPA) as a Reader, and developed and now lead the Centre for Health, Wellbeing and Behaviour Change. In 2020 I became a Professor of Health Psychology and Behaviour Change at the University of Bedfordshire and in 2022 I was appointed the Co-Director of UCL’s Centre for Behaviour Change and NIHR-funded Policy Research Unit (PRU) in Behavioural Science. I now hold a spilt role at as the Director of ISPAR at the University of Bedfordshire and Director of the UCL-hub of the PRU in Behavioural Science, and national Co-Director.

As a strong advocate for Health Psychology, my passion for the discipline shines through all that I do. I had the honour of being the Chair of the British Psychological Society’s (BPS) Division of Health Psychology (DHP) from 2019-2021 (Past Chair 2021-2022) and developed and have led the BPS COVID-19 Behavioural Science and Disease Prevention Taskforce since March 2020. Internationally, I was the UK National Delegate for the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) from 2011-2018.

One of my strengths is in building systems and networks to support others to reach their full potential and advance the health psychology discipline. This includes the development of the research centres and junior institute (J-ISPAR) within ISPAR, the Behavioural Science and Public Health Network (BSPHN: formally the Health Psychology and Public Health Network - HPPHN) for which I am a co-founder and the inaugural Chair, the Health Psychology Exchange (HPX) and the Health Psychology Trainee Network (HPTN), each of which aim to support professional identities, networking, research, practice and mentoring opportunities.

With my expertise as a practicing psychologist and professional trainer, I regularly integrate health psychology and behavioural science into non-psychology curriculum, CPD training and applied health practice. I especially enjoy training health professionals in communication skills, motivational interviewing, health coaching and behaviour change.

I am a strong advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion, and for fair access to training and career opportunities for those in health psychology. My ambition is to facilitate the development of a funded Stage 2 Health Psychology training pathway and I welcome those who may wish to commission, fund and/or participate in such training to get in touch.
