Dr Lindsey Smith
Senior Lecturer Sport, Health and Physical Education
My academic career began at De Montfort University where I completed a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science (2004-2007). Following this, I was accepted onto the PhD programme at the University of Bedfordshire where I was awarded my PhD in 2011.
I have been lecturing and researching in the area of physical activity and health since 2010 and enjoy adopting an innovative approach to teaching.
Following my PhD completion I worked for the UK's largest provider of childhood obesity programmes - MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition.... Do it!), developing community based healthy lifestyle initiatives in association with Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London.
Whilst appointed by MEND (2011-2012) I also held an Honorary Research Associate position with the Institute of Child Health at the University College London. I then returned to academia where I held the post ‘lecturer in exercise and health’ at the University of Derby (2012-2015).
My research interests have four underlying themes:
- the associations of sedentary behaviour patterns with cardiometabolic risk in children
- intervention strategies to reduce prolonged sitting time in adults
- the influence of different variables on weekday vs. weekend levels of habitual physical activity
- the influence of the pedagogical model ‘TGM’ on physical activity levels and constructs of self-determination theory during physical education.
