Karen Tozer

Tutor in Teacher Education

Karen Tozer

Following a career in the civil service and local government, I re-trained as a primary school teacher.

I worked in all year groups, although specialised in upper Key Stage 2. Alongside, my teaching responsibilities I led on Christian Distinctiveness and Collective Worship and then Mathematics, becoming curriculum lead for the school and part of the senior leadership team.

I introduced a new approach to teaching and learning of mathematics throughout the school which enabled children to become more effective problem solvers and reason successfully using their mathematical knowledge and skills.

I took these skills into an advisor role for a large Multi Academy Trust and became the maths specialist advisor for over 40 schools which enabled me to work with a variety of settings across 4 local authorities. This led me to working alongside leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and children throughout the primary phase enhancing their experiences of teaching and learning mathematics to ensure balanced lessons were in place, the needs of all children were being met and suitable training was delivered where required.

Whilst working as a primary school teacher and as an advisor, I worked part time for the University of Bedfordshire on the BA Applied Education Studies course; mainly on the mathematics units at Level 5 and Level 6.

Since 2019, I have worked full time for the University of Bedfordshire across the undergraduate and post graduate courses in Teacher Education, specialising in mathematics.

I passionately believe that the teaching and learning of mathematics should be active, linked to real life and fun. Everyone can achieve in mathematics with effort and support and no one should feel embarrassed or anxious if they have a skills or knowledge gap.

I am currently studying for a PGDip in Academic Practice with the University of Bedfordshire.
