Dr Karen Wicks

Senior Lecturer in Applied Education Studies

Karen Wicks

I joined the University in 2006 and since then my main responsibilities have been on the BA (Hons) Applied Education Studies course working as a senior lecturer and course coordinator.

Currently, my main teaching responsibilities focus on leading and teaching on the mathematics education and research methods units as well as undergraduate dissertation supervision.

Prior to joining the University, I worked in both primary and middle school settings in the UK, including a role as head of mathematics, and spent a year teaching in the United States on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange programme.

I have also worked within local authority provision, supporting schools in the development of mathematics teaching as part of the National Numeracy Strategy roll-out in 1999.

Within my research, I have a particular interest in supporting adults to overcome anxiety in the teaching and learning of mathematics, and I have published a range of research in this area.

I am also interested in the role technology has to play in supporting learning.
